Eddie gritted his teeth and rolled his yellow, tired eyes, worse for the lack of sleep. He was irritable because he was so exhausted and this made him on edge, dark shadows streaked under his eyes as if he had been punched. “I dun’ think a god did it. I dun think there is one or that there ever were one.” He shook his head and turned away, pacing the creaking floor unsteadily, raising a dirty, scarred hand to rub his eyes and face, trying to find a way to wake himself up. But once he lay down, he knew he wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Dropping his calloused hands back to his sides he turned back to face Jia he met her eyes for a moment before dropping his own. She made him feel guilty and he didn’t have a clue why, perhaps because she thought people brought it on themselves. He didn’t think so, but he couldn’t stop the creeping clammy chill of guilt run up his neck. “Shit ‘appens.” His voice was gruff, and low, talking more to the floor than anyone else in the room. It took him a while before he raised his head again, and still his eyes seemed fixed on a point somewhere near the floor at the other side of the room, guilt smeared on his face like poor makeup.
